The Language Club
Wednesday, October 21, 2009 at 2:22PM I love chatting with people like Myriam Perez because we share a love of language. She’s a linguist and language teacher with two Masters Degrees and 15 years’ of experience under her belt. And me, well I just play around with words.

Originally from Montpellier towards the south west of France, Myriam (pictured centre with teachers Dorothy & Susanne) has lived here for nine happy years and says she loves this location. Last month she started an association that is bound to be popular in multi-cultural Roquefort les Pins, so I had to find out more...
Dawn: So how did you come up with the idea?
Myriam: I was at the Mediatheque with my daughter one day and I was really impressed by the IT courses on offer and thought ‘why not offer the same thing for languages.’
Dawn: Why is this different?
Myriam: With my fantastic group of teachers, we aim to make this whole experience more fun and vibrant. As a teacher, it is hugely rewarding to see people’s confidence grow as they communicate more. We’re going to keep the courses real and relevant with the grammar to a minimum and the conversation of everyday expressions to a maximum. We want members to enjoy the social and friendly side of learning and not feel like are at school, that way they’ll stay motivated.
From chatting with Myriam I know that she is married to a Belgian man, loves our town not only for its great location but also for the peace & quiet, but strangely she is the first person I’ve EVER met who doesn’t love chocolate!
Dawn: So what is your favourite food and do you have a guilty food secret?
Myriam: Hmm I love paella, spaghetti and proper Belgian Fries made by my husband. I like salty savoury things more than sweet, so I would chose cheese not chocolate.
Dawn: A little escapism now...If you could travel anywhere on holiday, where would you go?
Myriam: Most definitely the Indian Ocean - the Maldives. I’ve been once and I think it’s paradise on earth – and under the water. I was taken there for the most wonderful birthday and it was just fantastic.
Dawn: What does this winter have in store for you?
Myriam: I’ll be busy with the new courses as both the English and French start on November 9 and that first term runs for ten weeks with a break for the Christmas holidays.
Dawn: If people are interested in joining what should they know?
Myriam: Club membership for our association is €15 one-off fee, and 20 hours over 10 weeks is priced at €200.
Dawn: And just one more question Myriam. If you don’t eat chocolate, when your in-laws bring you lots of lovely Belgian chocolate can I have some please?
Myriam: Sorry they live down here too nowadays.
Just my luck!
