The perfume maker

Susanne Lang is a Canadian perfume maker who has been living in the area for the last year. As Grasse is the perfume capital of the world, it’s not surprising that this part of France took her fancy...

DH: How long have you been doing this?

Susanne: I was ‘playing’ with perfumes as a small child in Toronto, but I’ve worked properly with fragrances for the last 15 years mainly in Canada and the United States, but in the last couple of years I’ve moved into the UK and France.

DH: I believe you have a loyal and famous clientele?

Susanne: I’ve created a perfume palette that can be layered and blended uniquely for my customers. And I’m lucky that they happen to include: Thandie Newton, Nicole Richie, Sienna Miller, Eddie Falco, Queen Noor, Teri Hatcher, Toni Colette, Paris Hilton & Jack Nicholson.

DH: What’s your favourite gadget/object or thing?

Susanne: My MacBook – very useful and I’d be really lost without it.

DH: What’s your favourite guilty food pleasure?

Susanne: Overeating at Wagamama when I visit London! Green curry soup with coconut milk and hot peppers is something I crave from there.

DH: You've obviously got a fine-tuned nose, so what’s your favourite smell?

Susanne: A walk in the forest after rainfall: Humid air and damp earth, and walking into a flower shop - cut stems, green leaves and blooming flowers.

DH: So what’s new this summer?

Susanne: Make up for nails - it’s called Paint n’ Peel and they are designed to be worn to match your changing moods and styles. As the name suggests they have been created to peel off so avoid the need for harsh nail polish remover (useful when you can’t travel with liquids so freely anymore) and come in a choice of trendy and classic colours.

DH: I’ve tried the blue and grey and just love them. What are your favourite colours?

Susanne: The reds are always popular but I also love the funky moss green with metallic top coat rather than just clear.

DH: Where can people get hold of this locally? It sounds perfect for South of France summer pampering.

Susanne: It’s very very new, but from August branches of Galeries Lafayette or online.
